(Deadline) Warner Bros has given the greenlight to Crazy Rich Asians, an adaptation of the bestselling book by Kevin Kwan to be produced by Color Force and Ivanhoe Pictures. John M Chu (Now You See Me 2) is set to direct a script by Pete Chiarelli and Adele Lim. A spring 2017 production start is being eyed in Singapore with a fully Asian cast planned — a first for a Hollywood studio.
The first book in a trilogy centered on an American-born Chinese economics professor and boyfriend and took an incisive and comical look at the extended families of high society in Asia, offering a bracing exploration of the cultural differences among Asians of Chinese descent around the globe.
Kwan’s first book published in 2013 has nearly 1 million copies in print worldwide; the third novel Rich People Problems is set to street in summer 2017 from Doubleday.
