(Variety) Lionsgate has acquired U.S. and U.K. rights to “Monster Hunt 2,” the upcoming sequel to Chinese smash hit “Monster Hunt.”

The deal also gives Lionsgate partial rights to lcoation-based entertainment facilities based on “Monster Hunt.” Lionsgate is already one of several partners building an entertainment venue in Zhuhai, China, just across the border from Macau and one hour’s travel across the Pearl River estuary from Hong Kong.

The “Monster Hunt” films are produced by Bill Kong’s Edko Films. The films are live action-animation hybrids directed by Raman Hui, the Hong Kong-born director who spent 20 years in North America and is often described as the co-creator of “Shrek.” Many of the effects were provided by Beijing-based BaseFX.

The original 2015 film became the highest-grossing film of all time in China with a cumulative gross of more than $380 million. That total has since been overtaken by “The Fate of the Furious” and “The Mermaid,” leaving “Monster Hunt” as third-largest. “Monster Hunt” was released in the U.S. by FilmRise, earning just $33,000.

The sequel stars returning thespians Bai Baihe and Jing Boran, as well as Tony Leung Chiu-wai (“The Grandmaster,” “Infernal Affairs”). The film is being shopped to international buyers at the Cannes Film Festival.

Lionsgate expects to release “Monster  Hunt 2” simultaneously with the film’s scheduled China outing in February 2018.

“I’m thrilled to partner with Patrick Wachsberger, Wendy Reeds and the rest of the Lionsgate team,” said Kong in a prepared statement. “I know that our franchise is in great hands.”

“We’re proud to continue our commitment to the most exciting properties and top creative talent emerging from China by partnering with Edko Films,” said Reeds, Lionsgate’s EVP of international sales and China/Asia productions and strategy.

Pseudo-documentary thriller "The Possessed" by young director Ma Kai will make its world premiere at the 70th Cannes Film Festival, producers said on Wednesday.
The film, dubbed as China's "The Blair Witch Project," was only made with a budget of 70,000 yuan (about US$10,165) while interesting enough, all the cast and crew are made of extra actors and normal individuals like housing agents, electric welders, restaurant workers and broadcasters. The director himself is actually a senior high school graduate and part-time actor working in Hengdian World Studios, Zhejiang Province.
It was screened for the first time and stood out at the FIRST Film Festival Xining 2016. Using its documentary style to explore the superstitions of rural areas, the film is able to build tension by secretly shooting and following the characters, and features a number of twists and turns.
Many who had seen the film are calling it "the best domestic thriller in a decade" and "really scary." After winning praise at FIRST, Ma has become one of the most sought after independent directors.
Tencent Pictures has acquired "The Possessed" and team up with another eight producers including Wanda Pictures, Joy Pictures and ticketing giant Maoyan to promote the low-budget yet unique film. Producers have spent extra money to hire professional crew to reshoot parts of the film and upgrade its sound effects, in order to make it better.
The film is set for a 2017 release with no date confirmed yet, but it may well be a dark horse in the Chinese market.
The Cannes film festival runs from May 17 - 28.

What is Angelababy’s secret to her post-pregnancy body?

(Toggle) In case you’re wondering how Angelababy managed to lose her baby weight so quickly, fashion publisher and a good friend of the model-actress, Su Mang, shared that it all boils down to having good genes.

Angelababy’s mother herself had regained her figure soon after giving birth as well, Su Mang said in an interview. The fashion publisher also gave the 28-year-old credit for working hard to shed the extra pounds after giving birth.

Although the couple has yet to post a full picture of their little bundle of joy and declined to reveal which parent he resembled more, the “extremely cute-looking” baby boy “has Xiaoming’s jaw and [Angela]baby’s big eyes, and a thick crop of hair,” said Su Mang.

Angelababy was accused of using a surrogate mother for her first child, nicknamed “Little Sponge” and her husband, Huang Xiaoming, posted a number of pictures from their maternity shoot, where the model’s baby bump was clearly on display, in an attempt to shut down the rumour mill.

Angelababy gave birth to Little Sponge in January this year. She and her actor husband Huang Xiaoming, 39, were recently sighted holidaying in America with Xiaoming’s mother by fans. The celebrity couple married in 2015.

A Bollywood Hit in China, Despite the Dancing

$
0
0

(WSJ) There’s an unlikely box-office champion in China right now: an Indian import called “Dangal.”

The Hindi-language film, starring A-lister Aamir Khan, is based on the true story of a father who coached his two daughters in competitive wrestling.

Since opening in China on May 5, it has grossed more than 550 million yuan ($80 million). Last weekend, it topped “Guardians of the Galaxy 2” from Walt Disney Co.’s Marvel Studios to take the No. 1 spot at the Chinese box office.

The strong performance is all the more surprising given the modest expectations for “Dangal.”

Indian films have historically done poorly in China, where audiences have at times been baffled at performers suddenly breaking into elaborate dance routines, a Bollywood trademark.

“Dangal” includes an all-but-obligatory dance scene, but in this case Chinese audiences don’t seem to mind, enthralled by the tale of a father’s love and dedication to his daughters despite a few ups and downs.

“I have not cried like this for years,” said one web user on China’s Twitter-like Weibo, who advised people to come to the theater equipped with tissue.

He Wei, the general manager of E Stars Entertainment, which bought the film’s distribution rights for China, said he had thought it might at best pull in 200 million yuan. The film is now set to run for at least two more weeks in China, giving it a shot at breaking the 1 billion yuan mark.

“How much the local audiences understand and appreciate this film is really beyond my expectations,” Mr. He said.

Observers say the film appeals to the Chinese reverence for family.

“Many audiences would relate to their own relationship with their fathers,” said Tan Zheng, a deputy director with Beijing-based film art center of China Federation of Literary and Art Circles.

One fan on social media called the film “inspirational and touching,” noting that the dancing common in Indian films is kept to a minimum here.

The film also stands out by being different from the other choices at the multiplex, according to veteran Shanghai-based film critic Wang Peilei.

“This Bollywood film cast a distinct contrast with some domestic productions that lack for quality performance and script,” Mr. Wang said. “It brings freshness to local audiences.”

Chinese state media has also taken note, suggesting that Chinese filmmakers might learn from the success of “Dangal.”

“It is hard to find any recent local film to compete with ‘Dangal’ from perspective of art and realism,” according to the state-run Xinhua News Agency. “The film industry should reflect on why ‘Dangal’–which has no romance plot but still touches people with true feelings–would harvest unexpected success.”

‘Wonder Woman’ Gets Chinese Trailer, Set for June 2 Release

(CFI) An all-new trailer for Wonder Woman subtitled in Chinese has been released, ahead of the film’s day-and-date release in China on June 2.

The 87-second teaser shows almost as much of male lead Chris Pine as it does of Gal Gadot’s title character.

Known in Chinese as “Magical Female Warrior,” the film opens on the same day as The Lost City of Z, which arrives in China two months after its North American release, and given China’s appetite for Hollywood superhero fare, should beat that movie handily at the box office.

(Variety) Chow Yun-fat and Aaron Kwok have begun filming on big-budget Chinese-language action film “Project Gutenberg.” The picture is being directed by Felix Chong, screenwriter on the original “The Departed” and director of the hit “Overheard” franchise.

The story, written by Chong, sees Hong Kong police hunting a gang of exceptional currency counterfeiters. Through a gang member (Kwok) whom they extradite from Thailand, the police find themselves on the trail of the gang’s shadowy mastermind (Chow). The cast also includes Dick Liu Kai Chi, Zhang Jingchu and Catherine Chau as the lead detective.

The film is a Hong Kong-China co-production, with production by Hong Kong’s Pop Movies and finance by China’s Bona Film Group. International rights are handled by Distribution Workshop, which has already struck some early pre-sales. It will begin licensing other territories at the Cannes Film Festival.

The film has been licensed to GSC Movies for Malaysia, Shaw Renters and mm2 Entertainment for Singapore, and Celestial Tiger Entertainment for pay-TV in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesian and Brunei.

Location shooting takes in Hong Kong, China, Canada and Thailand. Delivery of the completed picture is scheduled for 2018.

Chong teamed with Alan Mak to write the iconic “Infernal Affairs” crime trilogy, which was directed by Mak and Andrew Lau and was later adapted for Martin Scorsese as the Oscar-winning “The Departed.” Chang and Mak established Pop Movies in 2007 and went on to produce “Extraordinary Mission,” “Overheard,” and “Silent War.”

The 70th Cannes International Film Festival raised its curtain on Wednesday, with the screening of French director Arnaud Desplechin premiere "Les Fantômes d'Ismaël" (Ghosts of Ismael).
Celebrities from all over the world gathered in French Riviera for Europe's biggest film festival that runs from May 17 to 28.
Along with seven art stars such as Mathieu Amalric, Marion Cotillard, and Uma Thurman, the nine-member jury that is headed by the Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar, and includs American actress Jessica Chastain, Will Smith and Chinese actress Fan Bingbing, opened the mythical festival's red carpet.
This year's edition is overshadowed by a row between Netflix, which streams films and television shows to subscribers, and Cannes festival over screening right.
The American platform refused to screen its two films in the running for this year's Palme d'Or top prize in French cinemas in response to French rule which prevent it from streaming for subscription services in France until three years after their traditional box office release.
At the jury press conference earlier on Wednesday, jury president Almodovar said that "it would be a huge paradox that the Palme d'Or or another award-winning film could not be seen in theaters."
"All this does not mean that I am not open to the new technologies or to all what these technologies bring to us," he told reporters.
"In my opinion, what is decisive when one sees a film for the first time is the size of the screen: the size should not be smaller than the chair on which you are sitting. You really have to have the feeling of being humble and small compared to the big screen," he added.
For 70th festival session, the official selection includes 60 features out of 1,930 films with 19 competing for the Palme d'Or.

Depp in Shanghai with new Pirates edition

(China Daily) Captain Jack Sparrow is back with the fifth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales will be released in the United States, China and other parts of the world on May 26.

Johnny Depp, who plays the antihero Jack Sparrow, arrived at the Shanghai Disney Resort on May 11, accompanied by other members of the cast, including Javier Bardem, Geoffrey Rush and Orlando Bloom for the movie's global premiere in China. Many fans of the 14-year-old franchise waited outside the Walt Disney Theater at the resort to catch a glimpse of the stars.

Dead Men Tell No Tales is a new story of the high seas infused with fantasy, humor and action.

With the release of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl in 2003, came the dawn of Jerry Bruckheimer's most successful franchise, one of the most successful film series in the history of Disney Studios.

The first film was followed by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006), Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007) and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011). The four films have together made more than $3.7 billion so far.

In the latest film, Jack Sparrow feels the heat when Captain Salazar, played by Bardem, and his ghost sailors escape Devil's Triangle in a bid to kill him and the other pirates.

Jack Sparrow's only hope of survival lies in the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but to find it he must forge an uneasy alliance with Carina Smyth, an astronomer, played by British actress Kaya Scodelario, and Henry, a headstrong young sailor in the Royal Navy. Australian actor Brenton Thwaites is cast as the young sailor.

The movie is directed by Norwegian filmmakers Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg, both known for their epic based on real-life ocean exploration, Kon-Tiki, and for Marco Polo on Netflix.

For the directors, the opportunity to be part of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise was a dream come true.

"It's the kind of movie we grew up with and love," says Sandberg.

Ronning adds: "We knew that trying to do something original with the fifth installment was going to be a challenge, but that was important to us."

The movie was shot in Australia.

"I guess it's been a pirate's life for all of us," says producer Bruckheimer of the franchise's years.

The festival's organizing committee also released the first batch of eight nominated movies for the main competition.
This year's festival received a record 2,528 entries from 106 countries and regions, of which more than 400 movies will be selected to constitute the list of Film Panorama and some of them will be shortlisted for various sections of Golden Goblet Awards.
This year's Golden Goblet Awards jury will be chaired by Romanian director Cristian Mungiu.
The jury panel for the main competition comprises Chinese director Cao Baoping and screenwriter Li Qiang, American-Macedonian filmmaker Milcho Manchevski, Japanese director Hiroyuki Tanaka, known as Sabu, American producer Gary Michael Walters, and Chinese actress Xu Qing.

'Our Time Will Come' to open Shanghai film festival

Ann Hui's new film "Our Time Will Come" will be the opening film of the 2017 Shanghai International Film Festival and will also join the race to compete for the festival's Golden Goblet Awards, the organizers announced in Cannes on Thursday.
"Our Time Will Come" is an art-house war epic drama directed by China's most esteemed art house director Ann Hui, starring Zhou Xun, Eddie Peng, Jiang Wenli, Deanie Ip, Chun Xia, Wallace Huo, Tony Leung, Guo Tao, and Ray Lui.
Set in the 1940s, it tells a legendary story of how a guerrilla group led by a remarkable woman Fang Lan (Zhou Xun) rescued hundreds of cultural elites from Japanese occupied Hong Kong. It also portrays the fight and struggle for freedom and independence by youths of the resistance groups.
It is very rare for a film to become both the opening film and competition film at the same time in the film festival, which will celebrate its 20th anniversary in June. Zhou Xun, Eddie Peng and Wallace Huo will also compete in the actor’s category of the awards.
Though Ann Hui's last epic "The Golden Era" failed at the box office, it won Best Film and Best Director awards at the Hong Kong Film Awards. "Our Time Will Come" will surely be a great contender for various film awards and festivals if Hui hasn't lost her grip of her own artistry.
The film is going to be widely released in theaters on July 1, 2017 and will also mark the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to China.
The 2017 Shanghai International Film Festival will be held from June 17 - 26, organizers said at a promotional event at the ongoing Cannes Film Festival.
Romanian director Cristian Mungiu, who was awarded the Palme d'Or in Cannes with his feature "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days," will be the chairman of the jury for the Shanghai festival's Golden Goblet Awards. Chinese director Cao Baoping, screen writer Li Qiang, Chinese actress Xu Qing, Macedonian film director Milcho Manchevski, American producer Gary Michael Walters, and Japanese director Sabu will be the jurors.

Mysterious Chinese epic 'Asura' unveiled in Cannes

The mysterious Chinese fantasy epic “Asura,” probably one of the most expensive blockbuster films ever, unveiled a little part of itself by releasing three new posters and printing them on the cover of the world-famous entertainment magazine Variety during the ongoing Cannes Film Festival.
"Asura," based on Buddhist mythology, is already started in post-production and is set for 2018 summer release. The film is the debut directorial of Chinese filmmaker Zhang Peng who began his career as a Hollywood stunt coordinator ("Ant-Man" and "The Twilight Saga").
The film is reportedly the first part of a trilogy, starring big stars like Leo Wu, Carina Lau, Tony Leung and the foreign faces of Matthew Knowles, Damien Walters and Caitlin Dechelle.
The story is set in Asura, the dimension of pure desire according to ancient Buddhist mythology. The mythical realm is threatened by a coup staged from a lower heavenly kingdom and the story follows on from there.
Asuras are described in Indian texts as powerful superhuman demigods or demons with good or bad qualities. The good Asuras are called Adityas and are led by Varuna, while the malevolent ones are called Danavas and are led by Vritra.
Filming took five years spread over seven locations across China, including Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the city of Liupanshui in Guizhou Province.
Produced by Ningxia Film Group and Zhenjian Film Studio and several other Chinese studios including Alibaba Pictures, the film's executive includes producer Yang Zhenjian ("Painted Skin: The Resurrection"). Oscar winner Ngila Dickson ("The Lord of the Rings" franchise) serves as costume designer, while Martin Hernandez ("The Revenant,""Birdman") serves as audio director. Charlie Iturriaga ("Deadpool,""Furious 7" and "The Social Network") is in charge of the visual effects.
"'Asura' will break the limit in terms of technology for China film industry, and we are working in post-production and visual effects, and the quality will speak for itself eventually," producer Yang Zhenjian said.
The film is said to be China's most expensive fully domestic production and Asia's most expensive film produced to date with a budget of US$100 million and with a 1,800-strong international cast and a Hollywood production team from 35 countries and regions.

(Toggle) Wang Leehom turned 41 (his birthday falls on May 17) in style, throwing a celebratory party in the company of his close friends. Among the familiar faces spotted were Huang Xiaoming, Zhang Ziyi and her husband, Wang Feng. Leehom also took the opportunity to promote his concert documentary, Open Fire, at the party.

The birthday bash is said to have turned into a mini concert of sorts, with many of the guests picking up the microphone to take turns to sing. In particular, Xiaoming picked Leehom’s hit song ‘Ai De Jiu Shi Ni’, with the birthday boy playing the piano accompaniment for his guests.

After the party, Leehom posted snaps taken during the celebration with the caption, “I celebrated my birthday! Thank you for everyone’s well wishes!”

Netizens noted that the doting father kept to his word and kept his daughter’s faces away from the public eye, as they did not appear in his photos. He previously explained that he does this in order to protect them, and photos showing their full faces have never been released.

Apart from that observation, commenters also shared that Leehom’s boyish looks have not changed over the years, and showered praise on the singer for successfully maintaining his youthful looks.

(Variety) Upscale feature documentary “Colours of China” will begin shooting this year with Emmy Award-winning cinematographer Mike Single (“The Amazing Race,” “Clash of the Continents”) as director.

With a budget of 3 million euros ($3.3 million), “Colours” has been set up as a China-Germany-New Zealand co-production involving Germany’s Gebrueder Beetz, the Chinese Intercontinental Communications Center (CICC), and New Zealand’s Making Movies.

It will be packaged as a feature film for theatrical release and as a five-part spinoff TV series. The film is financed with investment by CICC and German Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, while the series is a co-production with ZDF, in association with Arte.

The project was announced at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday at a China-Europe co-production meeting organized by the Bridging the Dragon initiative.

“In China, five colors resonate through every layer of traditional and contemporary life, representing emotional, physical, spiritual and directional forces alongside the five elements. Using these profoundly influential colors as our guide and thematic motif, we explore the layered world of color within culture, characters, landscapes, moods, seasons and regions to present a celebration of the land, the people and ultimately the Chinese soul,” said Christian Beetz, CEO of Gebrueder Beetz Filmproduktion.

Making Movies and Gebrueder Beetz have previously co-produced factual series and high-end, effects-heavy drama-documentaries. Their “Modern Dinosaurs” is now in post-production. Scripted drama “War Stories,” based on events leading up to the 9/11 attacks in the U.S., is in pre-production.

CICC is one of the Chinese companies with the greatest experience in international co-production. It has co-produced series Arte, ZDF, NBC, PBS, Discovery and National Geographic, among others.

“‘Colours’ will be a symphonic visual narrative juxtaposing ancient and contemporary China while contrasting the natural world with astonishing built environments,” said James Heyward, CEO of Making Movies.
