Leo Wu Lei, Carina Lau Kar-ling lead fantasy film Asura

(China Plus) Chinese fantasy adventure film "Asura," which features Oscar-winning costume and set designers, will hit theatres on Friday.
Up-and-coming Chinese actor Leo Wu Lei plays one of the lead roles.
At the premiere in Beijing, he recalled the hardships he encountered shooting a scene with actress Zhang Yishang, who plays his love interest.
"In one scene, we had to chase and battle against each other between narrow cliffs. We had done a lot of preparations for that. Between the cliffs is just a narrow space, which confined us to move in a nimble way. For that scene, parkour masters were brought in to design our movements and also gave us a lot of training."
Hong Kong veterans Carina Lau, Tony Leung Ka Fai, along with Wu Lei – together play the same role as the titular three-headed demi-god.
American actor Matthew Knowles also plays a role in the new film.
Based on Buddhist mythology, "Asura" is believed to be the most expensive production ever in China at a cost of around 100 million US dollars.
The directorial debut of Chinese filmmaker Zhang Peng, who began working as a Hollywood stunt coordinator, the film features an international cast and a veteran Hollywood production team, despite being a Chinese-language film.

Zhang Yimou gets back to basics in shooting his new film

China's leading director Zhang Yimou appears to be going back to what he is good at – making a realistic drama based on a solid story.
The working title of the project is "One Second," with Zhang as director and as co-writer with Zou Jingzhi. Zhang and Zou previously collaborated on two films, "Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles" (2005) and "Coming Home" (2014).
Zhang rolled the cameras on Tuesday in Dunhuang, an iconic northwestern city in Gansu province that stands at the crossroads of two trading routes on the ancient Silk Road. He shot the films "Hero" and "The Great Wall" at the same location, and this time has called back many old colleagues experienced in the era of motion picture film. "This project has been a long-term concept for many years and is a memory of cine film."
Set in the mid-1970s in northwestern China, "One Second" tells the story of a movie fan in remote farmland and a homeless female vagabond. Actor Zhang Yi will play the leading role, while the leading actress is still being kept under wraps.
Huanxi Media, which recently entered a deal with Zhang, will produce the film.
Despite his enormous fame and reach within China's film industry, director Zhang's vision has not always played well with the public. He suffered both box office and critical failure for his Hollywood monster fantasy movie "The Great Wall" in 2016. But he may win back some hearts with his latest film "Shadow," a historical epic set in the Three Kingdoms era (220-280), which is due to hit Chinese theaters later this year.

Warner Bros.' Shark Movie 'The Meg' Gets China Release Date

(THR) Warner Bros' forthcoming action flick The Meg, in which Jason Statham battles a giant prehistoric shark, has landed a release date in China.
The film will open in the Middle Kingdom on Aug. 10, the same day it rolls out in North America, the U.K. and other major international markets. Warner Bros. may have been helped in scoring the advantageous day-and-date release by the fact that the film has considerable Chinese involvement.
The Meg co-stars Chinese actress Li Bingbing and it was co-financed and co-produced by Gravity Pictures, the film studio of entertainment conglomerate China Media Capital. Warners is a co-producer on the project via its Beijing- and Hong Kong-based joint venture film label Flagship Entertainment, in which CMC is also a majority shareholder.
Directed by Jon Turteltaub (While You Were Sleeping, National Treasure), The Meg follows the story of navy captain Jonas Taylor (Statham) as he tries to put his life back together following an escape from a deadly shipwreck that he claims was caused by an attack of a 70-foot prehistoric shark. After losing his credibility and nearly everything, Jonas is forced to confront his fears by venturing back into the deep to save the passengers aboard a sunken submarine — including his ex-wife, played by Li. Cliff Curtis, Rainn Wilson, Ruby Rose, Winston Chao, Page Kennedy, Jessica McNamee, Olafur Darri Olafsson, Sophia Shuya Cai and Masi Oka also star.

Sea-faring thriller set to storm Chinese cinemas

(China Daily) Based on a true story about a woman surviving hurricane at sea, the film Adrift has recently hit the North American theaters and is scheduled to be imported to Chinese mainland.
With Icelandic filmmaker Baltasar Kormakur as the director, Adrift co-stars California-born actress Shailene Woodley and English actor Sam Claflin.
In 1983, engaged couple Tami Oldham and Richard Sharp, played by Woodley and Claflin, respectively, set off from Tahiti to sail a yacht to San Diego. Despite both being experienced sailors, they are hit by a record-breaking hurricane out at sea that devastates their boat.
Adapted from the book Red Sky in Mourning: A True Story of Love, Loss, and Survival at Sea, the movie documents Oldham's journey after she wakes up to find Sharp seriously injured and how, with scant food and a crippled craft, she battles for survival.
To create a visual feast which not only features the catastrophic storm, but stunning ocean vistas, the movie has been photographed by the three-time Oscar winner and frequent Quentin Tarantino cinematographer, Robert Richardson.
The film is jointly produced by Beijing-based Huayi Brothers Media Corp along with American companies STX Entertainment and Lakeshore Entertainment, and London-based Ingenious Media.
