A number of Chinese films are premiering at this year's ongoing Toronto International Film Festival.

Famed Chinese director Feng Xiaogang has brought his much-anticipated black comedy "I Am Not Madame Bovary" to Toronto.

Starring Chinese superstar actress Fan Bingbing, the film tells the story of a café owner spending a decade fighting for her legal rights after being swindled by her ex-husband.

Some 1,700 tickets to the movie's world premier in Toronto were sold out in a day, with audience members giving it the thumbs-up after the showing.

Additionally, "Soul on a String," a mystical epic about a killer on the run, has also made its world premier in Toronto.

Combining two novels from writer Tashi Dawa, the film by director Zhang Yang provides a beautiful showcase of the local culture in western China's Tibet.

Two other films, "Birth of the Dragon" and "Old Stone," are also set to meet audiences in Toronto later in the week.

US-China-Canada collaboration Birth of the Dragon is based on the legendary life of Bruce Lee, while Old Stone, a joint effort by China and Canada, is about a cab driver's nightmare after he takes an injured man to the hospital.

Famous crime-thriller film director Cao Baoping's New film Cock and Bull, or "Zhui Xiong Zhe Ye"(追凶者也)in Chinese will hit theatres around China tomorrow.

Actor Liu Ye portrays Song Lao'er in the film. He revealed his efforts at the film's premiere recently held in Beijing.

"What's impressed me most is my first-day filming experience in which the director demanded I repeat 27 times to complete just one take."

The film starts with a robbery and then the murder of a motorist in a small town in western China.

The main suspect Song Lao'er, who doesn't trust the police to solve the case, works hard to hunt down the real criminal behind these crimes.

Liu Ye said his personality is similar to the role he portrayed.

"In real life, I may sometimes go overboard, which coincides with Song Lao'er's personality. Because he's a persistent person, he insisted on running after the criminal on his own."

Thanks to his role in Cock and Bull, Liu Ye has grabbed the Best Actor Award at this year's Shanghai International Film Festival.

The film also stars Zhang Yi, Duan Bowen and Wang Ziwen.

Director Cao Baoping's previous works include The Dead End, a film that enabled him to seize the Best Director Award at the Shanghai International Film Festival last year.

(China Daily) Chinese literature classic The Dream of the Red Chamber saw its English opera adaptation premiere in San Francisco on Sept 10.

Singers from China, South Korea and the US performed the opera in English for the 3,000 people in the audience. Chinese subtitles were provided in the theater.

It took the creators three years to adapt the original work's 120 chapters into a two hour, 20 minutes opera.

David Henry Hwang, the opera's librettist, minimized the original number of the characters to only seven, and took the love triangle of Jia Baoyu, Lin Daiyu and Xue Baochai as the core story line.

Before the performance, six lectures and meetings were held to foster communication with the opera's crew.

Composer Bright Sheng used traditional Peking Opera musical instruments to present the inner world of the characters on the stage.

"The Dream of the Red Chamber is an internationally appealing work, and I believe the love and family tragedy in the book will attract a lot of people," Sheng said.

Shi Yijie from Shanghai played the role of Jia Baoyu and Korean singer Cao Qing played Lin Daiyu.

"The book has another name, The Story of the Stone. My surname 'Shi' means 'stone' and people have being calling me 'stone' since when I was a child. And I guess it might be my destiny to perform the opera," Shi said.

After six performances in San Francisco, the opera will be staged in Hong Kong in March 2017. The Chinese version of the opera is expected to be performed in Beijing soon.

In a recent interview about GIRLS, Luo was quoted as saying: “Lots of young people like my artwork, especially girls. I think it’s because the images I took are very close to their real life... I am not sure whether [the models] are really emancipated, but I felt their bravery and their insistence on finding their ideal life.”

DreamWorks, China big part of Universal theme park future

$

(Orlando Sentinel) Expect more penguins, pandas and dragons around Universal theme parks in the future.

NBCUniversal Chief Executive Officer Steve Burke talked with analysts Tuesday at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch 2016 Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference.

He touched on several parts of NBCUniversal's business, including theme parks and films.

Burke said NBCUniversal's recent purchase of DreamWorks Animation will boost the company's ability to churn out animated films, doubling the number to four annually. Also, he said, "all the DreamWorks characters will start to emerge in our theme parks, in attractions and characters..."

DreamWorks franchises include "Madagascar", "Kung Fu Panda" and "How to Train Your Dragon."

DreamWorks also distributed "Shrek", which already had a presence in Universal Orlando thanks to a licensing agreement.

Burke said the DreamWorks acquisition will provide more fodder for NBCUniversal's fledgling consumer products business too. DreamWorks' consumer products business is roughly the same size as Universal's.

"Putting the two together and allowing us to accelerate some of the efforts already underway is a good thing," Burke said.

Universal Parks and Resorts has attractions in Orlando, Hollywood and Osaka, Japan. The company recently bought a majority stake in the Japan park.

A Beijing theme park should open in 2020. NBCUniversal is making good progress on that project, Burke said.

China is a hot market for the industry right now. The Walt Disney Co. opened a theme park resort in Shanghai this summer. "Disney was told by Shanghai we want you to be the big U.S. theme park here and we have been told by Beijing we will be the big U.S. theme park in that city," Burke said.

"We'll own 30 or 40 percent of the park. Our partners are on the same schedule to get the park open by 2020," Burke said. "We have full models and drawings. We know what attractions will be there.

We've got complete agreement on sort of the way the structure of our arrangement's going to work…

We have hundreds of people currently working on the project and look forward to getting it open in a few years."

Universal will own the theme park with Beijing Shouhuan Cultural Tourism Investment Co., Ltd. (BSH Investment), a consortium of four state-owned companies.

Burke said he sees potential for Universal to open theme parks in other countries too.

The attractions, he said, will provide significant double-digit operating cash flow growth for many years.

"Out of all the businesses in some ways I think over a 10 or 20 year period, it's the clearest vision we have for how to expand at a very rapid rate for a very long period of time," he said.

Anne Hathaway Monster Movie Sells to Mystery Chinese Buyer

(Variety) A bizarre Toronto Film Festival market keeps getting weirder.

A mysterious Chinese buyer has picked up North American distribution rights to “Colossal,” an offbeat monster movie starring Anne Hathaway that opened at the festival over the weekend, Variety has confirmed. No word yet on the identity of the company that put up the money, but it will be revealed in coming weeks when the backers announce an investment in a U.S. distributor. It will get a theatrical release in 2017.

This year’s festival has been slow going, with very few major deals closing after nearly a week of screenings. Fox Searchlight did make a splash by acquiring “Jackie,” a biopic about Jacqueline Kennedy, but aside from that very few titles have secured distribution.

“Colossal” was one of the festival’s hotter targets because it stars Anne Hathaway in a showy role as an alcoholic New Yorker and earned solid notices when it debuted. The film drew interest from other buyers, including indie label A24.

In the movie, written and directed by Nacho Vigalondo (“Open Windows”), Hathaway plays a character who, after getting dumped by her boyfriend, discovers that she can control a creature in Seoul.

CAA and Voltage Pictures handled the deal.”Colossal” co-stars Jason Sudeikis and Austin Stowall.

The deal was in the mid-seven figure range, but a sales price was not revealed.

The film was produced by Zev Foreman, Nahikari Ipiña, Russell Levine, Dominic Rustam and Shawn Williamson.

Deadline first broke the sale.
